Norman’s Kelbie Washington – Driven Athlete of the Month Presented by Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Norman
- Updated: December 31, 2019
By Ryan Stone
The Norman Driven Athlete is Norman High girls basketball player Kelbie Washington. Last season she stuffed the stat sheet averaging 11.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 4.0 assists per game on a team that won the State Championship. As a junior, Washington knows even more will be expected of her.
“This year is a lot different,” said Washington, “I’m expected to have the ball in my hands more and we don’t have as much depth. So, we must stay healthy and I’ll be expected to score more this season.”
During the offseason, Washington has worked a lot on her defense and the team has worked on moving the ball better in their sets. Despite winning the State Championship last season Washington and Norman still have big goals.
“Our expectation and goal is to win state again and our biggest thing this year is just getting in shape because we don’t have as much depth so us being in shape will be a big thing for us this year,” said Washington.
Kelbie’s play on the court has garnered her a lot of attention and offers from division one schools. She already has offers from Tulsa, ORU, University of Texas at Arlington, Army, and San Francisco among several others.
Outside of basketball Washington also plays soccer and runs track at Norman. She’s also a standout in the classroom with a 3.98 GPA.
After high school Washington plans to play division one basketball and hopes to play overseas after college.
