Norman North’s Abigail Porter – Driven Athlete of the Month – Presented by Landers Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM of Norman
- Updated: May 17, 2019
By John Tranchina
For Abigail Porter, her involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is longstanding and has become a major part of her life. The senior cheerleader, who has been part of the Norman North FCA Leadership Team for the past two years, was recently named to the FCA All-State team.
“Being involved with FCA, they’ve always been kind of a second family to me,” said Porter, who also participated in track and field at Norman North her first three years of high school. “I’ve kind of grown up in FCA since I was about nine years old and I’ve really built relationships with the coaches and their families and bringing that into my school was a really cool opportunity, too. FCA is a really good way to get your friends involved in more of a Christian environment, rather than just forcing church on them. It’s a good mix of athletics and Jesus.”
Porter, a cheer captain for the past two years at Norman North, was named to the 2018-19 All-State Cheer Team and next year will be attending Texas Tech University, where she plans to major in nursing and is trying out for their Cheer Team. That was why she decided to take a break from track, where she ran the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, this spring.
“Track was a lot more of kind of a side job for me,” Porter said. “I really enjoyed it, and this year, going into college, I’m trying out for Cheer Team and that’s actually my main sport. So I decided to give my body a rest on track and mainly focus on that, so I took off this past year.”
Between her commitments to cheer, track and the FCA, not to mention her academics, among other pursuits, Porter has led a hectic life in high school.
“It’s been a busy four years,” she said. “It’s been stressful at times, but mostly it’s been awesome.”
