This season was a memorable one for the Moore varsity cheer squad. State competition and national competitions meant the squad had to put in the extra work to be prepared for the level of talent they would face this season.
Cheer sponsor, Shana Lewis, said the team worked extremely hard to achieve their goals this season.
“They have had a great season so far. They got second at state. We also had two teams compete at NCA nationals and they both finished third,” said Lewis.
The second place finish at state, held at Oral Roberts University, was in the Large-Co-Ed division. Moore finished with a final score of 241 points, while cross-town rival Westmoore placed first. The second place finish at state was a memorable one for the team and gave them confidence heading into nationals.
Several members of the squad played crucial roles in the teams development. According to Lewis, the leadership on the floor was excellent this year.
“We have had great leadership from our captains and seniors this year. The captain of varsity is Ki Grant and the co-captain is Asia Saunders. Our JV captain is Madison Blevins and the co-captain is Alyssa Mackerelle,” said Lewis.
Lewis said the area the team improved the most was their tumbling.
Moore also competed in the Game Day competition held at Yukon High School. The Game Day competition is judged on three catagories; Fight Song, Crowd Leading and Band Dance. Moore placed in the top ten for Class 6A.
The future of the program is on solid ground. With several returning starters and some young talent that will make their way to varsity next year, Lewis is excited to see what they can accomplish.
“The future looks great. We have a lot of talented athletes coming up from the junior highs,” said Lewis.
