Westmoore Jaguars Basketball – Presented by Eskridge Honda
- Updated: December 15, 2018
Westmoore Jaguars
BOYS
Scott Hodges
17-18 Record: 15-13
The challenge will be a big one for coach Scott Hodges as the Jaguars don’t have any starters back from last year’s team and not much experience from part-timers either.
So the battle for starting spots will be wide open. Perhaps the only one not in doubt might be Quinten Harrison (5-11, Jr.) who is listed as the point guard for Westmoore. Senior Payton Gordon (5-10) should be the off-guard. Jaden Shamas (6-3) and Reece Fuller (6-1) look to be slated at the forward spots with Derek Loper (6-2) and Ethan Scott (5-9) also in the mix to battle for a starting spot or be quickly off the bench as needed. Coach Hodges is philosophical about what lies ahead for his Jaguars.
“We have a great group of guys that play hard and are extremely coachable. We are a very inexperienced group as we lost a lot to graduation last season. But we are excited to compete hard together and continue to improve as a team.”
GIRLS
Matt Thornton
17-18 Record: 21-6
Head coach Matt Thornton enters his first season at the helm of the Westmoore girl’s basketball program. Coach Thornton returns one starter from the 21-win team a year ago.
“We are excited about this group of seniors and upperclassmen. We will surprise some people this season,” said coach Thornton.
One player looking to make a statement is Kristen Murcer (Sr.). Murcer averaged 9.2 points a game with 1.9 rebounds and shot 78% from the free throw line. Murcer sets the tone for the Lady Jags. Kamy Carter (Sr.) is another senior looking to leave her mark on the program. Carter averaged 2.8 points a game with 2.1 rebounds. Carter is a 50% three-point shooter. Jocelyn Smith (Sr.) will play guard with senior Rylee Masters at forward.
Madison Hays (Jr.) averaged 2.2 points and 1.7 rebounds a game. Hays will play forward with Shelby Kraus (Jr.) who averaged 71% from the field last year in a limited role. Also look for Tahtyana Jackson (Jr.) will see time at forward. Last year Jackson averaged 3.8 points a game. An entirely new staff will help coach Thornton this year as Josh McMartin, Brandon Phillips and Shanda Pigott join the staff.
