Norman Tigers
GIRLS
Michael Neal
17-18 Record: 17-10
The Lady Tigers will be banking on a pair of incoming freshmen to help take their program to the next level. Norman does have two starters returning from last year’s team that went 17-10 before bowing out in the area tournament. Point guard and VYPE Top 100 selectee Kelbie Washington (5-7, So.) had a great freshman season averaging 11.3 points per game along with four assists and four rebounds a contest and is already on the radar of colleges such as Tulsa and Oral Roberts. Also back to help run plays out front is Turner Mattingly (5-8, Sr.) who added 7.2 points a game and four rebounds. As the lone upperclassman, it will be her responsibility to provide the team leadership for this very young group around her. Though she didn’t start, Kendra Gillespie (6-3, So.) did see a lot of playing time for the varsity and her looming presence on the wings or in the paint will give opponents second thoughts about challenging her. That size and talent has already drawn attention from schools such as Ole Miss, OSU, Texas-Arlington and Oral Roberts. Those two aforementioned freshmen hoping to have the kind of first-year campaign that Washington had are Myka Perry (5-10, Fr.) and Mikayla Parks. The Lady Tigers may be another season away from challenging in Class 6A, but this talented young squad should at least make some noise this year.
