Norman North's Karlee Alonzo: Driven Athlete of the Month – Presented by Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Norman
- Updated: September 25, 2018
By Corey Heim
Karlee Alonzo, a senior at Norman North High School, has excelled as an outside hitter for the Timberwolves volleyball team.
Since beginning her volleyball career six years ago, Alonzo has played for a multitude of teams. She began playing at OK Premiere for two years, went to Oklahoma Peak for another three years, and has played at Oklahoma Charge for one year – along with playing for the Norman North team.
She began to play volleyball after moving to Norman from Texas, where she used to play soccer. With a new town and school, she decided she wanted to find a new sport to start over with as well. This led her to begin volleyball as she had friends who played and convinced her to give it a try. She instantly fell in love with the sport and everything it has to offer.
“What I enjoy most about competing is to win, and to learn new skills,” Alonzo said. “I love the challenge and the excitement of competition.”
She is extremely dedicated to the sport as well as being a strong teammate and leader for her fellow players.
“Setting goals, encouraging myself, and wanting self improvement to do better motivates me to be a good athlete,” Alonzo said. “What motivates me to be a good leader is having accountability, being emotionally stable, enjoying challenges, having responsibility, and wanting to inspire others to do their best.”
Alonzo does not only excel at volleyball, but also as a student. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her time in high school and if she continues to receive the highest marks, she will be ranked in the top of her class come May.
After graduating this coming May, Alonzo is planning on continuing her volleyball career at the collegiate level.
