OFFENSE
“Our numbers are up with several boys coming back out for football this year. We are excited by the development of our returning players and the work they have put in over the offseason,” said head coach Mat McIntosh. The Royals saw eight freshman see significant playing time and with the increased numbers McIntosh and his coaching staff have high expectations for 2018. It will be a tough task with State Champion Millwood and Finalist Washington in the same district. Times could be challenging. Sophomore Tyler Root (5-10, 160) and senior AJ Ward (6-0, 185) will battle leading up to the season for the QB job. Ward passed for over 1,000 yards last year but also tallied 458 yards on the ground. If Root gets the starting nod expect to find Ward in different places on offense. Evan Young (5-9, 165, Sr.) will give whoever is quarterback a solid receiving option with big play ability as will Jacob Arbruster (5-7, 165, Sr.). The offensive line will lean on Tanner Campbell (6-1, 270, Sr.) and Alex Laffin (5-11, 230, Jr.).
DEFENSE
Working out of a base 3-3-5 defense, the Royals will count heavily upon a pair of sophomore linebackers to lead the way in Alex Hoselton (5-10, 195) and Reed Holland (5-9, 195). Hoselton finished his freshman campaign with 65 tackles while Holland missed half the season due to injury and still totaled 30 tackles. In the trenches coach McIntosh and staff will look towards Chris Ledford (6-0, 250, Sr.) at defensive tackle who totaled 35 tackles as a junior. In the secondary, Matthew Gray (6-0, 180, Sr.) and Seth Files (5-7, 160, Sr.) will roam from their safety spots. Gray wrapped up 50 tackles last season while Files totaled 30 tackles. Jackson Bush (6-0, 180, Jr.) is another to keep an eye on as he isn’t afraid to get in the action totaling 25 tackles in 2017
