Despite enduring some difficult times last year, A.J. Ward is full of optimism for Community Christian’s football team heading into the 2018 season.
The senior quarterback, who also plays defensive back on defense, was the Royals’ leading rusher and passer in 2017, but the team struggled quite a bit, scoring more than 14 points just three times and going 0-10 for the year.
But Ward, who is also a respected leader in the locker room, believes things will be different this time around.
“It’s tough at times, but you just really got to remain positive,” Ward said of going through a winless season. “We’re working to get better and be really good this year. We got some guys coming back that weren’t there last year and I’m feeling a whole lot better about this upcoming season.”
Knowing that he can play a key role in helping the team improve, Ward has been working hard this off-season on his passing.
“Probably just throwing the ball better,” he said of what he was focusing on the most this summer. “I was mostly running last year, so this year, I really want to be a better passer.”
And as a senior, he takes his role as a leader seriously, too.
“It’s great, I love teaching the younger guys and helping them, so when I’m not there any more, they can carry on,” Ward said.
“A standout football and basketball player,” said Community Christian coach Mat McIntosh of Ward. “He has been a leader by example this off-season in the weight room and this summer in team camp and 7-on-7.”
