BOYS

Scott Hodges

16-17 RECORD: 21-6

Coming off a trip to the Class 6A state tournament the Westmoore Jaguars are looking to make another deep run and yet again give themselves a chance to compete for a gold ball this year.

“We are excited about the potential of our team. We have a great opportunity to build on last season’s success with a lot of experience returning. This group plays extremely hard and plays together,” Westmoore head coach Scott Hodges said.

Three returning starters headline Hodges’ group this season and that trio is led by point guard Will Graham (5-10, 155, Sr.). Last season Graham averaged 10.1 points per game to go along with 5.3 assists per contest. Damoriea Vick (6-4, 195, Sr.) is a long and athletic guard to contend with and should likely improve on his average of 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game from a year ago. The last piece of Westmoore’s killer triumvirate is forward Jackson Dyer (6-9, 210, Sr.) who averaged 8.1 points and 7.6 rebounds as a junior.

Other key members of the Jags’ rotation this year will be guards Kenny Springs (6-2, 165, Sr.) and Anthony Riley (6-4, 180, Jr.). Last season Springs averaged 7.0 points and 2.1 assists per game while Riley poured in an average of 5.1 points and hauled in an average of 4.1 rebounds. The biggest x-factor to the team however may be forward James Palmer (6-3, 215, Sr.) who did not play last year due to an injury.

Jalen Breath (6-6, 180, So.) didn’t see varsity action as a freshman a year ago but will be asked to step up and contribute this year as a sophomore.

GIRLS

Andrea Guziec

16-17 RECORD: 17-10

The Westmoore Lady Jaguars came into last season with high hopes, and while a 17-10 season and a trip to the Area tournament aren’t bad results the Lady Jaguars had hoped for more. This year though Westmoore brings back five starters and that veteran leadership has head coach Andrea Guziec excited about the potential of her squad.

“We have a veteran team with a strong bench. We are building a chemistry that will make us a team to watch,” Guziec said.

Anybody who has been paying attention to girls basketball in the state of Oklahoma for the past three years knows that for Westmoore everything revolves around dynamic guard Jessi Murcer (5-7, Sr.). As a junior, Murcer averaged 22.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game and could easily see those numbers rise this year. Don’t sleep on the other Murcer on the squad though as Kristen Murcer (5-5, Jr.) will likely start at the point this year after averaging 9.4 points, 3.5 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game last year.

The other guard spot in the Westmoore lineup is likely to be filled by Jocelyn Smith (5-9, Jr.) who averaged 7.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game last year.

In the frontcourt Whitney Outon (6-0, Sr.) gives the Lady Jaguars a serious weapon in the post. As a junior, Outon averaged 6.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.2 assists per game. Kendra Gillispie (6-2, Fr.) is also a name to remember although don’t bank on this young talent letting you forget.

Jaycie Stonebraker (5-10, Sr.) will add some depth to the frontcourt this year as will Veronika Zilajeva (5-9, Sr.). Last season the duo of Stonebraker and Zilajeva combined to average 8.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Also working off the bench this year will be guards Hannah Sykes (5-6, Sr.), Kelsi Fitzgerald (5-7, Jr.), Kamy Carter (5-5, Jr.) and Madison Hayes (5-8, So.). Rylee Masters (5-8, Jr.) rounds out the Westmoore roster as a forward who will also work off the bench.
