Westmoore Character Counts Football: Riley Mize – sponsored by Eskridge Honda
- Updated: July 13, 2017
Westmoore head coach Lorenzo Williams rarely notices his two-year starting left tackle on film. It’s not because he doesn’t stand out.
At 6-foot-5, 310 and receiving interest from Air Force, SMU, Missouri Western and Drake among others, senior Riley Mize certainly stands out amongst his peers.
Williams doesn’t notice as much because Mize rarely makes mistakes. He’s far more obvious making a pancake block or kicking out a cornerback in the Jaguars’ screen-game offense.
“He just never messes up,” Williams said. “He doesn’t bust. He’s always doing his job, and he’s good at it. … He dominates at the point of attack. He’s just a really, really good player for us.”
Williams called Mize one of the top leaders on the team. Mize shrugged it off, saying that the team leads as a group, and he’s just one of the leaders. Mize has helped at Regional Food Banks and helps out with the Westmoore kids’ football camps. He does it all quietly and willingly, something that his coach takes notice of.
“He’s a great kid,” Williams said. “He’s one of three of our kids on the team that has a 4.0 core GPA. He’s just an unbelievable guy. He comes to work every day and works his butt off. You don’t really get many accolades because he plays offensive line, but he’s one of the reasons we had a lot of success last year.”
